Id?
Sigmund Freud envisioned the id,
one’s primitive reality,
concealed from awareness,
as It existed before being socialized.
Socialization,
identifying oneself as one’s
personality,
Freud thought to be the realistic self.
A hundred years later
we have all but assumed
his theory is true.
Never forget that psychoanalytic theory is a theory.
I doubt if the unconscious within us,
is murderous or destructive.
In unguarded moments I see people slip
into immoderate excellence.
They accidentally
conceive a new concept,
act creatively,
perceive a new way.
Brilliant, spontaneous, unsocialized behavior—
could this be the the id sneaking out?
